Julio Suárez – in Kollaboration mit Galería Agustina Ferreyra

Julio Suárez – DC OPEN 2015

Ausstellung: 05. September bis 31. Oktober 2015
Öffnungszeiten: Montag – Freitag: 09.00 bis 18.30 Uhr und Samstag: 10.00 bis 14.00 Uhr

Julio Suárez is probably one of the most significant Puerto Rican artists of his generation. His work navigates between the limits of drawing and painting, and has been concerned for over 40 years with fundamental aspects of the medium such as: form, color and surface.

His paintings, poetically employ a language similar to that of geometric abstraction in order to delineate the presence of color on the canvas. His geometry though, is informal and intuitive; a system that follows no mathematic rigor whatsoever, but that is rather guided by feeling and subjectiveness. This allows his color fields and monochromes to feel loose, while his lines and folds generate ʻtensionʼ within the canvas, subverting the modernist rigor with a playful and relaxed approach to his practice.

Julio Suárez was born in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico in 1947. He lives and works in San Juan. He studied scenography in the National School of Theater in México City, México and has exhibited extensively throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America as well as in the United States, including: New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. His work is part of several private and institutional collections such as the Puerto Rican CulturalInstitute (ICP); The Museum of Puerto Rican Art (MAPR), The Contemporary Art Museum of Panamá and The Contemporary Art Museum of Puerto Rico (MAC). Recent exhibitions include: Lugar específico (Specific Place), Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico; Dreaming is a form of Planning, Galería Agustina Ferreyra; The Way In, Fundación Banco Popular, San Juan and Julio Suárez, Museum of Modern Art, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Now he has also exhibited his works in our travel agency with an art gallery in Cologne, Germany.
